Welcome to Special Delivery, the UMMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology electronic newsletter. Through this and future issues, we hope to build a sense of community among the department and those who partner with us. Sharing stories from across the campus and from our other locations is important to us and we hope you enjoy our reports.
Our residency program has been busy welcoming new interns and sending off our PGY4's! Our new academic year just started and we have two new chiefs: Dr. Shelby Claire Liddell and Dr. Logan Roka. We have a total of 21 residents this year with rotations happening in Tupelo and Hattiesburg.
The MFM fellowship program is off to a great start this year. We have two outstanding new fellows who joined us in July. Dr. Rachael Morris recently took over as program director and has been busy working with all of the fellows.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is proud of our faculty and staff who strive to make a difference daily in the lives of their patients and our students. Several of our faculty and staff received awards over the past few months and we want to recognize them.
We have several new faces that have joined our department over the past few months. We are excited to have them with us!
Dr. Miguel A. Luna Russo graduated in 2015 from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology residency, where he served as chief administrative resident. He then completed his fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery in 2021 at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He currently serves as the director of endometriosis and chief of the GYN division at Cleveland Clinic South Pointe Hospital. Read more about Dr. Luna Russo.

The research division within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is currently maintaining and developing a multitude of research projects ranging from clinical trials, educational research, retrospective chart reviews and basic science projects.
When a woman expecting twins walked into the emergency room at Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall, she was in labor and her babies were premature – and breech.
Dr. Vicky Sopelak recently retired from UMMC after a 38-year career in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as IVF lab director. A reception in her honor was held at the home of Dr. Harriette Hampton.
